Kun onnittelin EGSiä tästä palkinnosta, hän vastasi giffillä Kummisetä-elokuvasta, jossa Al Pacinon esittämä Michael Corleone sanoo: ”Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” Ihmettelin, miksi mainosala haluaa palkita yhden heistä, joka jätti oravanpyörän ja lähti tavoittelemaan unelmaansa. Sitten tajusin, että siitähän me kaikki luovat haaveilemme. EGSillä oli rohkeutta tehdä se. Art directorista tuli artisti. Tutustuin EGSiin 1990-luvun alussa, kun hän opiskeli graafista suunnittelua Lontoossa. Hän oli jo silloin kansainvälisesti tunnetuimpia suomalaisia graffitimaalareita. Hänen maanalainen suhdeverkostonsa kattoi kaikki alan legendat Euroopassa ja New Yorkissa. Miten sellaiseen asemaan pääsi? Vain yhdellä tavalla: Maalaamalla enemmän kuin muut, matkustamalla enemmän kuin muut. Tekemällä enemmän töitä. Mainostoimistoissa työskennellessään EGS ei koskaan valittanut työstä tai sen määrästä. Ainoa asia, joka sai hänen verensä kiehumaan oli rehellisyyden puute itse työtä kohtaan. Pitää tehdä ja kokeilla, ei leijua. Ja juuri kokeilu, etsiminen ja riskinotto tuntuvat pinterestien, midjourneyjen ja viikoittain vaihtuvien muotifonttien maailmassa oikealta. Siitä on kyse myös EGSin taiteessa: eri tekniikoita yhdistävissä maalauksissa, installaatioissa ja lasiveistoksissa. Lasinpuhaltamisessa lopputulos on aina yllätys, sillä virheet kuuluvat luomisprosessiin. Lasia tehdessä kuka tahansa voi polttaa itsensä samalla tavalla kuin graffitissa joku voi jäädä piikkilanka-aitaan kiinni. ”Molemmissa on pieni vaaran tunne”, EGS sanoo. ”Parhaat teokset syntyvät silloin, kun kaikki tuntuu menevän pieleen.” Luova ala on perinteisesti palvonut lahjakkuutta ja luovia neroja, jotka poimivat ilmasta juuri oikeaan hermoon iskevät ideat ja ratkaisut. Totuus on, että parhaat tekevät paljon töitä. EGS edustaa luovan alan työläissiipeä, jossa tehdään enemmän kuin puhutaan ja paistatellaan. Hän saapuu työhuoneelleen säntillisesti joka aamu viimeistään puoli kymmeneen mennessä, laittaa Future Sound of Londonin soimaan ja keittää kahvit. EGSin teoksia esitelläänmuseoissa ja gallerioissa ympäri maailmaa. Silti voimme luottaa siihen että hän postaa joka ikinen perjantai Instagram-tililleen kuvan uudesta graffitista saatteella: ”Thank God It’s Friday!” Työvoitto. - When I congratulated EGS on this award, he responded with a Godfather movie GIF with Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino, saying: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” I wondered why the advertising industry would want to give the award to one of those who had left the rat race to chase a dream. Then I understood that that is what all of us creative types dream of. EGS had the courage to do it. An art director became an artist. I got to know EGS in the early 1990s when he was studying graphic design in London. He was already back then one of the most internationally renowned Finnish graffiti artists. His underground network covered all the industry legends in Europe and New York. How did he gain such a position? There is only one way: by painting more than others; by travelling more than others. By working more. While working in advertising agencies, EGS never complained about the work or the amount of it. The only thing that made his blood boil was the lack of honesty about the work itself. You must create and experiment, not flaunt. And it is the experimentation, exploration and risk taking that feel right in the world of pinterests, midjourneys and weekly changing fashion fonts. That is what it is all about also in EGS’s art: paintings, installations and glass sculptures combining different techniques. In glassblowing, the result is always a surprise, because flaws are part of the creative process. In making glass, anyone can get burned in the same way that in making graffiti, someone can get caught in a barbed wire fence. “There is a slight sense of danger with both,” EGS says. “The best works are created when everything seems to be going wrong.” The creative sector has traditionally worshipped talent and creative geniuses who pick ideas and solutions in the air that strike the right chord. The truth is that the best work a lot. EGS represents a wing of creative workers who do more than talk and bask in the glory. He arrives at his office every morning by 9.30am, puts on the Future Sound of London and makes coffee. EGS’s works are exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. Still, we can count on him to post a picture of a new graffiti every Friday on his Instagram account with the caption: “Thank God It’s Friday!” A hard-won victory.
