Zacharias Topelius määritteli Suomen lipun värit vuonna 1863 Helsingfors Tidningarissa kuvaamaan pohjoisten merien kahta olomuotoa: sulkevaa jäätä ja avointa vettä. Värien osalta määritelmä ei kuitenkaan enää pidä paikkaansa – meri on muuttunut vihreäksi ja sitä ympäröivä jää likaisen harmaaksi. Päivittämällä Suomen lipun värit vastaamaan Itämeren nykyistä tilaa hyödynsimme vetosimme kansalliseen ylpeyteen ja käytimme kulttuurisesti tuttua viitekehystä, jonka muutos on mahdoton ohittaa.
Zacharias Topelius defined the colours of the Finnish flag in 1863 in Helsingfors Tidningar to describe the two states of the northern seas: enclosing ice and open water. However, the definition is no longer valid when it comes to colours – the sea has turned green and the surrounding ice a dirty grey. By updating the colours of the Finnish flag to reflect the current state of the Baltic Sea, we capitalised on our appeal to national pride and used a culturally familiar frame of reference, the change of which is impossible to ignore.
